The single most common answer is the one nobody wants to hear.
Your drive is slow because it is a spinning hard drive. That is just how they are.
The table above shows the live SSD and drive prices on your marketplace, because the real fix for most people is an upgrade.
The big one: it is just a hard drive
Here is the uncomfortable truth first, because it solves the most cases.
Spinning hard drives are slow at the small random reads that booting, opening apps and everyday use depend on. A physical head has to move to each scrap of data, and that takes time.
An SSD does the same job many times faster, with no moving parts. That is why swapping a hard drive for an SSD is the single most transformative upgrade you can make.
If your slow drive is your main system drive, this is almost certainly your answer. Check the live prices above and plan the swap.
Other common causes
That said, a few other things genuinely slow a hard drive down. Rule these out too.
- A nearly full drive. Hard drives slow down badly when stuffed near capacity. Free up space and breathe.
- Heavy background activity. Indexing, updates, antivirus scans or sync tools can hammer the drive. Check what is running.
- Fragmentation. On a spinning drive, scattered files slow things down. Letting the system defrag a hard drive (only a hard drive, never an SSD) can help.
- A failing drive. If it used to be fine and suddenly crawls, that is a warning sign.
Could it be failing?
Worth checking, because a slow drive is sometimes a dying drive.
If a drive that was always fine suddenly turns sluggish, starts making odd noises, or throws errors, read its SMART health.
Rising reallocated or pending sector counts mean the drive is on its way out. Back up now and replace it.
But often a slow hard drive is simply a healthy hard drive being slow. The SMART check tells you which.
