SSDs are where people overspend the most, so let me be the friend who stops you.
The box above is pulling live SSD prices for your marketplace. Check it before you get seduced by a shiny gen 5 drive you will never feel.
What counts as a good SSD price per TB?
Here is my no nonsense ladder.
- Under about 50 to 60 per TB: grab it, that is a genuine deal.
- Around 70 to 90 per TB: normal, fine, move on.
- Over 110 per TB: you are paying for marketing, not speed.
Flash has got dramatically cheaper. So a “cheap” SSD from two years ago is now just an expensive one.
SATA, NVMe and the gen 5 trap
Most people do not need the fastest drive on the shelf.
They need a fast enough drive at a sane price.
A gen 3 or gen 4 NVMe is plenty for gaming, editing and everyday speed. Gen 5 drives run hot, cost a premium and give you numbers you will only ever see in a benchmark.
Buy the speed you will actually notice, then put the saved money into more capacity.
